For those of us who grew up in the 90s, it was all about wearing clothes with your favorite rapper`s name on them and listening to their songs while waiting at a red light. Hip hop was everywhere- even if you didn`t like it! However, by the time I became an adult, hip hop began to seem dated and less cool than other genres. Nowadays, many people have forgotten about hip hops significant influence on our society. The only place you`ll find rap is in commercials for clothing brands or car companies that want to appeal to urban youth markets.

For those of us who grew up in 90s America, we wore clothing with popular rappers` names and listened to Hip Hop and rap as if it were a religion. Hip hop influenced our culture in more ways than one.

Take the language for example, rapper`s use of “slang” and metaphors let them express their feelings in a way that people from different Hip Hop backgrounds could relate to. Themes such as racism and discrimination were also common topics which made hip hop relatable to many listeners who felt they had no voice. Mostly minorities like African Americans and Hispanics. Hip Hop was embraced with resounding popularity.
